Shardlow, Derbyshire (NC 268)

The marina at Shardlow on the Trent and Mersey Canal. Shardlow is situated at the eastern end of the canal near the confluence of the R. Derwent and the R. Trent below Derby. The canal was basically created to transport pottery as smoothly as possible from the ceramic factories of Josiah Wedgewood in Staffordshire to the R. Mersey and the ports of Liverpool. The construction work was carried out in the late 1770’s by the famous canal builder James Brindley (who also engineered the Bridgewater Canal which is connected to the T & M.).
