Hardwick Hall Gardens, Derbyshire (NC 353)

A view of Hardwick Hall, Derbyshire, from the gardens.  Way ahead of it’s time for a Tudor Hall, this building was built close to the Old Hall for the formidable Bess of Hardwick, Countess of Shrewsbury, in the 1590’s. The architect was Robert Smythson who was influenced by the Renaissance architecture of Italy at a time when it became unnecessary to fortify domestic dwellings of this size.
