Stanage Edge XII, Peak District (NC 463)

Stanage Edge XII is a large oil on canvas studio painting that is part of a series of 12 images of Stanage Edge all from the same day having experienced the wildness of Storm Amy, the first autumnal weather depression of 2025. We were camping at the North Lees campsite below Stanage, sheltering from heavy rain in our van for most of the weekend (two mature trees were blown down nearby because of the strong winds). Luckily the rain eased enough on the pm of the 5th Oct. for my wife and I to amble over the stoney terrain up onto the edge to be greeted with an amazing lighting effect as the sun broke through the thick cloud cover. This resulted in wonderfully dramatic views over to Castleton and Mam Tor. I wanted to try to catch the textures and colours of the gritstone edge and its contrast with the brittle sunlight that made the scene so dramatic.
