Hills of the Upper Dove Valley (NC 439)

Hills of the Upper Dove Valley with autumn tints starting to appear in the trees. This original oil sketch painting features ‘Hitter Hill’ and ‘High Wheeldon’. They are part of a line of similar carboniferous limestone peaks that make up the Derbyshire Dales side of the River Dove (originally part of a coral reef formed billions of years ago when the British Isles was situated in warm tropical seas), Staffordshire being on the opposite west side. A great location for sketching and painting plein air, the peaks of Chrome and Parkhouse Hills are further upstream and have featured in many of my previous paintings of the area which I love.
