Cromford Mill, Derbyshire (NC 324)
This painting, in pure watercolours, shows Arkwright’s first water powered mill house of the 1770’s (above right) and the mill stream that once turned an enormous water wheel in the second mill (destroyed by a fire in the 1950’s) – the wheel’s shaft would have been situated in the stonework near the foreground. A huge amount of money has been spent in recent years by the Sir Richard Arkwright Society (charity) to decontaminate this area of the toxic waste that had built up after many years of lead based paint production.
