Below Thorpe Cloud, a pyramidal hill of limestone guarding the entrance to Dovedale, the River Dove flows southwards between the famous stepping stones. Visitors have to pass between these limestone squeeze stiles to walk upstream towards Milldale and on to Wolfscote Dale, although this is as far as most people venture to have a picnic by the river in the summer months!
