Shrovetide Football, Ashbourne (NC 102)
Ancient annual Shrovetide football being played in St John Street, Ashbourne, Derbyshire. The steam rises from the heat of the players ‘hug’ as the Up’ards and the Down’ards teams try to move the ball towards their respective millstone goals that are three miles apart and situated at Sturston and Clifton. My late uncle, Jack Clarke, goaled a ball for the Up’ards side in 1954. Painted in watercolours.
